Suffolk v Bedfordshire25-Jun-2017

The 2017-18 Eastern Counties League season – under new captain Rick Hanley – began away to Bedfordshire. Suffolk improved on last year's encounter, winning two of the three matches: the 'A' Team were defeated 7-13 VPs (-20 IMPs) but both the 'B' and the 'C' teams won, 14-6 (+27) and 15-15 (+36) respectively.

Mixed Pairs21-Jun-2017

It was déjà vu at the Mixed Pairs event held at the excellent Lavenham Village Hall; just as in 2016, Jane and Andrew Moore were the overall winners and retained the Ringer Cup and John Gan and May Li won the Lang Cup which goes to the top married pair who are not overall winners.

Just 23 pairs contested the event which was played in a warm (in every sense) and sociable atmosphere! By its nature this is a very enjoyable event which deserves more entries next year.

Suffolk AGM26-May-2017

Committee changes

Last Sunday's AGM left the SCBA committee broadly unchanged; all incumbent county officers and committee members were re-elected. There was one vacancy and Malcolm Pryor joins the committee as a member. Malcolm was also elected as an EBU Shareholder (with Malcolm Carey).

County Captain

Rick Hanley takes over as county captain from David Price. In his Chairman's address, Jeff Orton thanked David for his tenure as captain during which Suffolk qualified for the Tollemache Final for the first time (and three times in four years). Under his captaincy the Suffolk 'A' team also twice finished top of the Eastern Counties League first division.

The new captain has a hard act to follow; writes:

Rick hanley Posing at Abbey Road!

My initial goal will be to ensure that we field the strongest possible pairs in all three of our ECL teams. I also think it is important to select players who are willing to participate in both home and away fixtures. Consequently, I will attempt to ensure that all players who represent the county in away matches will be selected to play in an equivalent number of home matches. I will also endeavour to give players as much notice as possible when they have been selected to represent the county.

I am grateful to Jill Tattersfield who will continue to help with fixtures and team admin. I have also asked to recruit players for the 'C' team. I would encourage any Suffolk player who would like to be considered for selection to contact me or Richard by email (via links to our names).

AGM Business

The Chairman Jeff Orton announced that there would be no East Anglian Bridge Weekend (Green-Point events run in conjunction with Norfolk and Cambs and Hunts held on Ipswich Waterfront) in 2018 due to calendar congestion.

The Treasurer, Roger Tattersfield, reported that financially 2016-17 has been a very successful year for the SCBA with a satisfactory surplus of income over expenditure, and almost all areas of the accounts showing an improvement relative to the previous year.

The meeting ratified without dissent the county P2P rate and club subscription for 2016-17 (unchanged at 7p and nil respectively.

Bridge With Lunch24-May-2017

Suffolk's second 'Bridge with Lunch' held in Somersham attracted players of all experiences from across the county. They all enjoyed a splendid lunch with wine, prepared by restaurateur Gerry Ford (who also played), to whom many thanks are due.

Lunch was followed by the bridge, which was won by Pauline Hanson and Barbara Barker from Ipswich.

After an efficient AGM the first event of the 2017-18 season was promptly under way. Tony Shearman and Robert Green began the new season as they finished the old; their previous county outing was to win the Championship Pairs and they had another fine score to take the AGM event.

2016-17 Winter League3-May-2017

Winners of both divisions of the 2016/7 Winter League have now been decided.

Premier Division

Though the Premier division is not quite complete, Hanley (Rick Hanley, Maria Allnutt, Chris Chambers, Peter Gemmell, Debby Sutcliffe, Peter Sutcliffe) were comfortable winners having won all of their six matches.

Division Two

The second division reached an exciting climax. When the last two matches were being played, four teams still had a mathematical chance of promotion. Harpur from Bury St Edmunds (Jo Harpur, Helen Mason, Pamela Pope, David Mathews), who had an outstanding first season in the league, won their final match by a sufficient margin and were promoted to the Premier division as champions.

Congratulations also to Edwards (Anne and Phillip Edwards, Paul and Wendy Lefort) who defeated Hollingsworth in their final match 13-7 and leap-frogged above them to gain promotion as runners-up. Commiserations to Hollingsworth (Chris Hollingsworth, Richard Evans, John Bloomfield, Celia Jeal) who had led the division for much of the season.

Suffolk v Essex26-Mar-2017

The final fixture of the 2016-17 Eastern Counties League season at home to Essex was a muted affair: all three Suffolk teams lost. The 'A' Team were defeated 7-13 VPs (-16 IMPs), the 'B' Team, 4-16 (-48) and the 'C' 6-14 (-26).).

Suffolk v Cambridge University12-Mar-2017

Suffolk defeated the University team 17-3 (+64 IMPs).

That's the whole of the result because after shrinking from three teams to two, the students now only field one. Let's hope that is just the ebb and flow of talent and enthusiasm of organisers and not a truly worrying sign.
