Stansfield Bridge Club's Artful Support of Youth26-Jan-2018

The success of all four English Junior Teams (U26 Open, U26 Women, U21 and U16) at the European Youth Championships in 2017 delivered a problem the EBU are, in the many respects, pleased to have: the responsibility to send those teams to Suzhou in China later this year.

No surprise then that we might see dedicated fund-raising this year but Stansfield Bridge Club's idea is as unexpected as it is brilliant. Fortunate to have renowned artist Rui Paes in their midst, they are selling prints of a special bridge artwork in support of the youth teams.

Dr Double by Rui Paes

Dr Double by Rui Paes

Rui has the reputation for free use of the double card, hence the title and subject matter. The limited edition print is taken from an original previously on show at the club's art exhibition last year. Rui is an acclaimed painter, illustrator and muralist, whose works include illustrating Madonna's children's book which made the Top 10 New York Times Best Seller List.

Artist, Rui Paes

The prints of Dr Double measure 14½" x 11" and cost £25 (+p&p). The prints will be signed by the artist in a limited edition numbered 1 to 500. All the profits will go to funding the England teams.

To obtain your print please order direct from Stansfield Bridge Club.

Suffolk are matching the funds raised by Stansfield and will do so for any club that supports the Youth Teams in China. Subject to a maximimum of £200 per club and a county-total of £800.

Suffolk Mid Anglia Pairs21-Jan-2018

The Mid Anglia Pairs at Woodbridge was very well attended – 34 pairs enjoyed an excellent day of IMP-scored bridge, which was won by Malcolm and Karen Pryor with Phillip and Anne Edwards in second place. We were very pleased to see two junior players in the field, and even more pleased when they both finished near the top – 3rd and 7th overall. Thanks are due to Woodbridge for hosting the event again.

Tollemache Qualifier19-Nov-2017

With the draw now known earlier in the week, Suffolk approached Saturday knowing their place in the 'Group of Death'. The draw is partially seeded as last year's eight finalists are split between the four groups but along with two seeds (holders London and Manchester), two counties who narrowly missed out last year (Cambs & Hunts, Surrey) dropped into Group A. The remainder were contenders from past eras.

With that context established Suffolk struggled and finished bottom, gaining some scalps on the way. This wasn't as bad as it looks and, as a whole, the team played in line with ratings. It's a tough game.

The county were represented by Rick Hanley (Capt.), Chris Chambers, Peter Gemmell, Eric Newman, Jeff Orton, Karen Pryor, Malcolm Pryor and Mike Sherer.

As in recent years, an excellent tea was provided and served by the local Sea Scouts (below with players and ample provisions).

World Wide Bridge Contest23-Sep-2017

Cleopatra Hensby and Jenny Price in Beijing, playing in the final of the World Wide Bridge Contest.

WWBC Final

At time of writing (11:25) they are in play and the results are like on a club night, watching a screen that comes round only every few seconds in a minute. Oh, it doesn't have names on it but individual player IDs….

Jenny and Cleopatra are 69 & 70 and might be 34th. Or possibly that's some other folks. Details from the WBF site for the WWBC.
