The Schapiro Spring Fours
Peter Gemmell (l) and Peter Sutcliffe (r) defending against Irving Gordon (declarer, obscured) and Keith Stanley in round three.
The Spring Fours is perhaps the toughest event in the bridge calendar. A knock-out that gives you two lives, where the country's strongest teams battle with top names and champions from abroad.
Credit then to Suffolk quartet Chambers (Peter Gemmell & Peter Sutcliffe, Jim Gobert & Chris Chambers), the only team in the bottom half of the seeded draw to reach the fifth round.
Suffolk Captain David Price playing on the Mossop team (John Carroll & Adam Mesbur, David Mossop & Gojko Zivkovic, David Price & Colin Simpson) battled through to the final but lost to the undefeated number two seeds Allfrey (Alexander Allfrey & Andrew Robson, David Bakhshi & Tony Forrester).
Those with an interest in arcane formats can read about the competition - and discover what an uphill struggle it is to play the undefeated team - on the EBU's Idiot's Guide to the Spring Fours and also the results
