Stratford St. Mary

We have moved icon

First things first: welcome back Stratford St. Mary Bridge Club who have rejoined the EBU and all their members are now part of Suffolk. That's only one of the changes at the club, they now have a website, www.bridgewebs.com/stratfordstmary.

But shortly afterwards a fire at their venue, the Officers' Club in Colchester saw them move to:

St Johns & Highwoods Community Centre
Highwoods Square
Colchester
CO4 9SR

Stratford St. Mary play on Wednesdays at 7:15pm.

Bury St. Edmunds

Bury St. Edmunds have also moved, from next Thursday 2nd September they meet at:

Nowton Court Village
Nowton Road
Bury St. Edmunds
IP29 5LU

Directions and a map can be found on their club web site. Visitors are welcome and the new facilities are excellent. Bury play on Thursdays at 7:00pm.

All bridge clubs in Suffolk are listed on our clubs' pages, that is not just those affiliated but everywhere that bridge is played. If you know of a smaller club that would like a listing, please get in touch.

Bridge in the Cupboard

Charles, the three of spades

Tenniel's gardeners were the five and seven of spades, but with typical self-effacement, Charles is the three. Curious? Well you've every right to be.

If you are new to the series or have missed one, catch up at the index of all the tales.

Forthcoming Events

Winter League 2010-2011

The Winter League is one of the SCBA's premier tournaments. However, it is also a very friendly competition with matches played in members' homes on dates agreed between captains. The League has a Premier and Second Division and, if sufficient teams enter, there will also be a Third Division. There are promotions and relegations between the Divisions at the end of each season. The competition runs between October and April inclusive with each team usually playing one 24-board match per month.

New teams are very welcome – contact league Secretary to register interest or ask any questions – by Tuesday 7th September 2010 please. Download an entry form.

Invites have been sent out to captains of last year's teams (check your inbox if you played in 2009-10). The arrangements are the same this year except that the EBU VP Scales have been almost imperceptibly updated. Download a new copy.

Ipswich Swiss Pairs

Sunday 12th September 2010, 2:00pm at Kesgrave Community Hall. Swiss Pairs is an exciting format where everyone has a chance. The organisers will be using Bridgemates and making current round assignments to heighten the competitive action. The two-session event is excellent value at £7 per person. Tea and coffee will be served during the interval and soft drinks are available throughout.

Any queries (email preferred) to (01394 383701). You can download an entry form from the Suffolk website. The Ipswich club site also has details.

Suffolk Men's and Women's Pairs

Wednesday 15th September 2010, 7:15pm at Ipswich Indoor Bowls Club. These are seperate one-session events for 'unmixed' partnerships. The cost is £5 per person, Entries and enquiries to Competitions Secretary, (01379 870291).

Felixstowe Congress

The congress is filling up – is your entry in?

The Felixstowe weekend is 2nd/3rd October.

Each day (Pairs or Teams) is £20 but the full congress is only £35 and there will be a prize fund of £1500. Both the Saturday Championship Pairs and the Sunday Swiss teams are Green-pointed. Congress secretary (01206 861729) will answer any questions you have and runs a partnership desk to match up single players and partnerships with team-mates.

Club Director Training Days

Norfolk are running Club Director Courses at Wymondham:

Costs are £40, £40 and £45 respectively. The courses are run by Malcolm and Barbara Carey but all bookings should be made to the EBU. Part of the rationale for direct booking is because there is a discount for multiple attendees: the following is from the EBU web-page, http://www.ebu.co.uk/lawsandethics/td-training/.

Under the Universal Membership scheme affiliated clubs are invited to send a second club member to a TD course FREE OF CHARGE where the club sends a full paying member to any of the club TD courses.
