September 2010
Start of Term
It's the start of the academic year and it's the start of the bridge teaching year too. Set along the same lines as the school year, typically bridge is taught in three terms and beginners start at this time of year, usually in October when people have returned from late summer holidays.
Bridge needs new players and there are people out there who want to learn – why don't YOU introduce someone to this great game?
Ipswich & Kesgrave Club
Ipswich & Kesgrave, who meet in Kesgrave Community Centre, are running the EBU Teaching for Club Development scheme. They are offering the EBU course, three ten-week terms, to turn beginners into club players. They are having a free 'Taster Session' on Thursday 30th September at 7:30pm.
Details from the club website – you can download a flyer with details of the course or email or (01473 218366). Call or email if you would like to come along to the free session this Thursday.
Colchester Area
Suffolk member Christine Cooke is starting classes at the Hythe Community Centre, 1 Ventura Drive, Hythe, Colchester, CO1 2FG. The centre is purpose built with central heating, ample car parking and disabled facilities.
Again there is a free taster, on Monday 4th October at 11:00am at Hythe. Contact (01206 860689) to register interest. The course will be ten weeks from 11th October and be taught along EBU lines.
Framlingham Club
Framlingham, who meet in Framlingham Conservative Club, have already started their classes and details are on their website. Contact to plead for a late entry.
Suffolk Novices
Don't forget our very own Suffolk Novices competition in November – details below.
Teacher Training Course – Stowmarket
As part of its Teaching for Club Development the EBU offers clubs a free teacher-training session (provided that club remains affiliated for three years). These courses are moving around the country and are generally two days. The full schedule is on the EBU website. The good news is that the next one – that's not already full – is in our area.
Stowmarket, January 15/16 2011: places on these courses should be booked by the registered secretary of the affiliated club. If someone from your club would like to attend one of these, please contact at the EBU on 01296 317218. To get an idea of what the course entails see 'Hosting a Course' (slightly oddly).
Teachers…
We have our own local Teachers' Page on the Suffolk website – if you are a teacher and want some exposure there, email the website with a picture and brief biography.
Bridge in the Cupboard
Nimue – who? You might know her better as the lady in the lake but in the cupboard she's the ten of clubs. Hmm, I'm not sure that came out right…
The 2011 Events Calendar
The recent initiative to involve clubs with Suffolk events has been well received and the calendar has now been finalised. See our Events Page for details beyond the end of year.
Forthcoming Events
Felixstowe Congress
Weekend 2nd/3rd October, Felixstowe. Still time to enter the congress!
Each day (Pairs or Teams) is £20 but the full congress is only £35 and there will be a prize fund of £1500. Both the Saturday Championship Pairs and the Sunday Swiss teams are Green-pointed. Congress secretary (01206 861729) will answer any questions you have and runs a partnership desk to match up single players and partnerships with team-mates.

Throughout October there will be heats for the Suffolk Pairs – details from your club.
Suffolk Club Teams of Eight
Sunday 31st October 2010, 11:00am at Woodbridge. This year clubs are invited to enter more than one team of eight into the competition. Entries should still be via club secretaries; all enquiries to Suffolk Competition Secretary, (01379 870291).
Suffolk Novices
Sunday 7th November 2010, 2:00pm at Risbygate. This event is primarily intended for students taking bridge lessons, Bridge for All Students, and social players new to duplicate bridge. The field will be divided to take account of varying levels of ability and the emphasis is on friendly and enjoyable bridge.
Entrants do not need to be members of the Suffolk Contract Bridge Association. There will be between 10 and 18 deals before tea with less experienced groups playing fewer boards at a slower pace. After tea, there will be further bridge and the event will finish at around 6.30pm – with prize giving by 7:00pm.
You can download Entryform and would be glad to answer any questions.
